1. Acceptance of Terms
By creating an account, accessing, or using Afterword (“Service”), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service (“Terms”). If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
If you are using the Service on behalf of an entity, you represent that you have authority to bind that entity.
2. Description of the Service
Afterword provides:
AI-enhanced journaling
Voice transcription
AI-generated summaries and reflections
Semantic search chat
Optional cloud synchronization
Credit-based usage system
The Service uses third-party AI providers to generate content.
We may modify, suspend, or discontinue any feature at any time.
3. AI Output Disclaimer
The Service generates content using artificial intelligence.
You acknowledge and agree:
AI-generated content may be inaccurate, incomplete, or misleading.
The Service does not provide medical, legal, therapeutic, financial, or professional advice.
You are solely responsible for decisions made based on AI output.
The Service does not replace licensed professionals.
Use at your own risk.
4. No Professional Advice
The Service is for informational and personal journaling purposes only.
It is not:
Medical advice
Psychological counseling
Legal advice
Financial advice
If you are experiencing distress or crisis, contact appropriate emergency or professional services.
5. User Content
You retain ownership of your content.
You grant us a limited license to:
Process
Store
Transmit
Encrypt
Analyze (via AI providers)
We do not claim ownership of your content.
You are responsible for ensuring you have rights to all submitted content.
6. Privacy
Your use of the Service is governed by our Privacy Policy.
You acknowledge that:
Content may be processed by third-party AI providers.
While encryption measures are implemented, no system is completely secure.
We are not liable for unauthorized access beyond our reasonable control.
7. Credits and Usage Limits
The Service operates on a credit-based usage model. Credits are consumed when you use AI features — for example, creating a journal entry from a voice recording, chatting with your journal, or generating a weekly summary. Different features consume different amounts of credits.
There are three types of credits:
Plan credits — included with a paid subscription. They are granted at the start of each billing period and do not roll over; unused plan credits expire when the period renews.
Extra credits (credit packs) — one-time credits you may purchase in addition to a subscription. Extra credits do not expire and remain available until used, including across billing periods. An active subscription is required to purchase extra credits, but not to spend credits you already own.
Trial credits — a one-time allotment granted to new free accounts. Trial credits do not refresh.
When you use a feature, credits are drawn from your plan credits first, then your extra credits, then any remaining trial credits.
Credits have no cash value and are not transferable or exchangeable.
Credits are not redeemable for cash except where required by law.
We may adjust credit costs, plan allotments, and pricing for future periods; such changes do not affect credits already granted to you.
We reserve the right to adjust or revoke credits obtained through error, fraud, or abuse.
8. Subscriptions and Purchases
Afterword offers optional auto-renewing subscriptions and one-time credit-pack purchases.
Billing and renewal
All purchases are processed by the Apple App Store. Payment is charged to your Apple Account at confirmation of purchase.
Subscriptions automatically renew at the then-current price unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
Your Apple Account is charged for renewal within 24 hours before the end of the current period.
You can manage your subscription and turn off auto-renew in your Apple Account settings (Settings → Apple Account → Subscriptions). Afterword cannot cancel a subscription on your behalf.
Annual subscriptions provide the same monthly credit allotment, refreshed each month during the prepaid year, and are billed once per year.
Changes and cancellation
You may upgrade or downgrade between tiers; changes take effect according to Apple’s proration rules.
If you cancel, you keep your plan and remaining plan credits until the end of the current paid period, after which the account reverts to the free tier. Extra credits you have purchased are retained and do not expire.
Refunds
Purchases are processed by Apple, and refunds are governed by Apple’s policies. Refund requests are made through Apple, not Afterword.
If Apple grants a refund for a credit pack, the corresponding credits are removed from your balance (your balance will not go below zero).
If Apple grants a refund for, or revokes, a subscription, the account reverts to the free tier; previously purchased extra credits are retained.
We are not responsible for third-party billing errors.
9. Acceptable Use
You agree not to:
Use the Service for unlawful purposes.
Attempt to bypass usage limits or throttles.
Automate usage beyond intended human interaction.
Reverse engineer the Service.
Abuse, harass, or harm others using the Service.
Upload malicious code.
We may suspend or terminate accounts for violations.
10. Account Suspension and Termination
We may suspend or terminate accounts:
For violations of these Terms.
For fraud or abuse.
For excessive or automated usage.
To comply with legal obligations.
We may do so without prior notice.
11. Service Availability
The Service is provided “as is” and “as available.”
We do not guarantee:
Continuous availability
Error-free operation
Accuracy of AI outputs
We are not liable for downtime, interruptions, or data loss.
12. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law:
Unthinking AI, LLC and its owners shall not be liable for:
Indirect damages
Consequential damages
Emotional distress
Lost profits
Data loss
Decisions made based on AI output
Total liability shall not exceed the greater of:
$100 USD
OR the amount paid by you in the preceding 12 months.
Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations.
13. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Unthinking AI, LLC from:
Claims arising from your content
Violations of these Terms
Misuse of the Service
Infringement of third-party rights
14. Intellectual Property
The Service, including software, design, and branding, is owned by Unthinking AI, LLC.
You may not copy, distribute, or modify the Service without permission.
15. Arbitration and Class Action Waiver
Any disputes shall be resolved through binding arbitration.
You waive the right to:
Jury trial
Class action lawsuits
Arbitration shall occur in the State of Delaware, unless otherwise required by law.
16. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, United States, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
17. Changes to Terms
We may update these Terms at any time.
Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance.
We may require re-acceptance for material changes.
18. Severability
If any provision is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions remain in effect.
19. Entire Agreement
These Terms constitute the entire agreement between you and Unthinking AI, LLC regarding the Service.
